22 Best Things to Do in Arizona
Here are 22 places that Arizona’s love to visit while spending some vacation time in AZ.
1. Explore the Grand Canyon National Park
#Famous things to do in Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of the most special places in the entire world. The Grand Canyon stands as one of the seven wonders of our world. It’s no wonder why millions of people travel here every year. Once you stand next to it, you will understand why. The breathtaking view is powerful enough to freeze anyone for a moment. How beautiful nature can be! No words are enough to express the beauty of the Grand Canyon.
There are many roadside pull-offs to enjoy the Grand Canyon and numerous viewpoints, but if you’re looking for something a little more intense and adventurous, you can check out the Bright Angel Trail, which takes you along the white trail. Sand beach at the bottom of the canyon. It’s about a 20-mile day, but what an experience to get to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! Take extra care if you’re traveling with small children. Go there early and enjoy the wonderful creation of nature.
2. See Monument Valley
#Best things to do in Arizona

It actually stands right on the borderline of Utah and Arizona, but on the Arizona side lies the Navajo National Tribal Park and Visitor Center. It really is a place of incredible beauty and iconic landscape. Its image shows up on screens, magazines, and advertisements, capturing the attention of people all over the world.
Nestled amidst the vast and barren desert, high sandstone buttes majestically rise toward the endless sky in vibrant reds and oranges, contrasting against the blue. And of course, it is not a visit without stopping on Forrest Gump Road, as seen in the famous movie. For visitor purposes, there is a 17-mile loop road to travel with many places to pull over for photos. This is one of those very special places: Monument Valley.
3. Coconino National Forest
#Things to do in Arizona

Most preferred spot to retreat. The Coconino National Forest is characterized by a varying topography that ranges from a red rock desert to cool pine trees. Many types of wildlife can be found in this region, and many types of outdoor activities including camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, etc. The place also has numerous geological features and historical sites available for exploration The beauty and seclusion found within this forest cannot be compared to that of any other forest. Kindly consider other visitors, the wildlife, and nature around. Always keep the area clean; Don’t leave anything behind, or take anything but memories; Respect the fire bans; Leave wildlife alone.
4. Visit Antelope Canyon
#Unique things to do in Arizona

Antelope Canyon is truly a natural wonder, offering two distinct but equally mesmerizing experiences. Upper Antelope Canyon is a great way to see the beautiful canyon and is actually quite easy with more adventurous hikes. The Upper Canyon captivates with its iconic light beams and wide, easy-to-navigate trails, making it a photographer’s paradise.
If you’ve ever heard of Lower Antelope Canyon, it’s that super famous place that becomes so tempting to visit; it takes a permit, and it has been closed during the pandemic. Pressing on with the adventurous quest, the play of light and shadow is equally breathtaking here, with every turn revealing a new look.
You can make a day of it, kayaking directly into Antelope Canyon, or taking a backpacking trip to Antelope Island if you so prefer.
5. Canyon de Chelly National Monument
#Top things to do in Arizona

Canyon de Chelly National Monument This historic national monument has a rich past that spans over five thousand years. A beautiful landscape with cliffs, ancient rock art, and a deep canyon carved by Chinle Wash. The Navajo Nation, who have lived in the area for thousands of years.
You almost have your place on the South Rim, the North Rim we had to ourselves.
Unfortunately, the White House Trail is closed so the only way to hike is with a (free) ranger tour or an organized tour which is quite expensive. You can explore the canyon through guided tours, hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints.
6. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests
#Best things to do in Arizona

Extending more than 2 million acres across the Mogollon Rim and the White Mountains, the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest is impressive in its range. It is a biologically rich area with beautiful alpine meadows, pine trees, and many lakes and rivers. Among the attractions are recreational activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation. The forests are inhabited by various species such as elk, black bears, and bald eagles. People come in large numbers to enjoy the low temperatures during the summer and even the snow-covered surfaces in the winter. There are also several trails along this area.
7. Coronado National Forest
#Best things to do in Arizona

Coronado National Forest which is situated in the southern part of the state of Arizona is over 1.78 million acres conquered with 12 different ranges of mountains nicknamed the ‘Sky Islands’. These islands are built up from the surrounding barren desert and thus have many eco-zones ranging from lowland deserts to overhead mountains with forests. The forest has several plates of recreational activities such as hiking, camping, bird watching, and driving to view beautiful scenery.
The visitors may also enjoy the unique views and biodiversity found within the trails around the Chiricahua and Santa Catalina and the Pinaleno mountains. There’s ample parking space, hence, I readily encourage you to make use of these free hiking routes anytime you are in the area.
8. Lake Havasu
#Fun things to do in Arizona

Nestled in the western region of Arizona bordering California is Lake Havasu, a tourist center ideal for vacationers who love clear blue waters, outdoor activities, and the renowned London Bridge restoration. Going further south are places like Parker and Scotts Beach where they happen to have the Parker Strip near the Buckskin Mountain State Park. It’s a nice place to relax. This artificial lake is very popular for activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, and other water sports. The dry desert nourishes the beauty of the area. I would advise visiting it between June to August as it is hotter.
9. Relax at Lake Powell
#Fun things to do in Arizona

Lake Powell is also one of the largest artificial water bodies in the world. It is situated in Arizona and Utah states. It was created out of the elevation of the Glen Canyon during the erection of the Glen Canyon Dam. At present, Lake Powell is regarded as one of the top tourist spots in the state of Arizona. Lake Powell, which is famous for its canyons of red rock and clear water and over two thousand miles of sheltered water, is a place for water activities such as boating or fishing. Also do not forget to check Rainbow Bridge National Monument, Bullfrog Marina, the Haight Overlook region, Reflection Canyon, and of course the hiking trail.
10. Discover the Petrified Forest National Park
#Free things to do in Arizona

Petrified Forest National Park is situated in the northeastern part of the state of Arizona. The place is abundant with colorful petrified logs and fascinating rock shapes all over the park including, one of its longest and most well-known paths, Blue Mesa. As it takes only a few hours to drive through the national park with stops in between, this makes a perfect half-day excursion. Most of the hiking trails, should you wish to walk, are quite short and easy, however, you can also see most of the park from the various car parks provided so it is very easy for everyone.
11. Horseshoe Bend
#Things to do in Arizona

Horseshoe Bend is 10 minutes south of Page, Arizona, and is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s located on Lake Powell, and it’s really hard to describe the scale of this place. Photos and videos just don’t do it justice or even begin to show the size of this landscape so you should definitely explore this place in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
This place is getting quite commercial, so you now have to pay an entrance fee. The trail from the parking lot is 1.5 miles round trip and has an elevation gain of 137 feet. It’s a very nice and easy walk, exploring the horseshoe bends and bends by kayaking.
I would ask you to take glasses because the sandstorm will start suddenly and will actually be so strong that it will burn your skin.
12. Saguaro National Park
#Things to do in Arizona

Saguaro National Park is divided into two parts – one on the west side of Tucson, near Old Tucson, and then on the east side of Saguaro National Park near Vail, at the base of the Catalina Mountains – and both feature a variety of wildlife and cactus species, regardless of season. Worth watching in particular, look for unique “crested” saguaros with broad tops. Each park has numerous trails of varying altitude and intensity, and there is also an eight-mile scenic drive to the east. Visitors in late spring will see prickly pear and staghorn flowers, and those intrepid exploring in early summer will see daisy crowns on saguaros (beware of the heat and drink plenty of water).
13. Kaibab National Forest
#Cheap things to do in Arizona

The Kaibab National Forest, located in northern Arizona, encompasses the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon. It covers more than 1.6 million acres and is divided into three districts: North Kaibab, Tusayan, and Williams. The forest is home to wildlife such as elk, deer, and birds, from its diverse range of ponderosa pines to meadowlarks. There were lots of hiking trails nearby, there was a company that sold food, and drinks and rented kayaks, etc which made it even better. Fishing was fine, but there are no trout stocks and since it flows from a naturally flowing lake there is no swimming. Cozy at night, and warm during the day. Absolutely incredible place to camp.
14. Tonto National Forest
#Things to do in Arizona

Tonto National Forest, located in central Arizona, is one of the largest national forests in the United States, covering nearly 3 million acres. The forest on the west side has a lot to offer. This site is not really for solitude seekers, but hiking or doing some 4×4 trails can get to those spots. As well as being popular for outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, and boating, Tonto has stunning lakes, rivers, and canyons including the Salt River and Moglon Rim.
The county and state have plenty of opportunities for water sports, OHVs, Jeep trails, scenic areas along area lakes, and great day-use spots. If you look around there is some wild camping. Just a nice drive and some nice views. Take a hike and every turn will reveal another beauty. Looks like traffic can be tough during peak hours.
15. Jerome
#Things to do in Arizona

Discover Jerome, a city that has witnessed a turbulent history. Once a thriving mining community, it faded into a ghost town. Today, it attracts tourists with its restored buildings, historic stores, museums, and impressive remains. Explore the Gold King Mine Museum and marvel at the sliding prison, which has moved 2,500 feet from its original location. Whether you’re visiting Sedona, Phoenix, Flagstaff, or Prescott, Jerome makes for an interesting day trip. Experience the allure of this reborn ghost town, offering both history and accommodation.
16. Phoenix
#Kid friendly things to do in Arizona

Phoenix, the capital city of the state of Arizona is a dynamic city quite characterized by its picturesque desert scenery and sun throughout the years. Situated in the Valley of Sun, it has an active and entertaining society that features a variety of museums, art galleries, and even theaters like Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Peoria, Surprise, Glendale, and every other big city you can think of, Scottsdale and Cave Creek included to the north. Lovers of the outdoors can find adventure in Camelback Mountain and the Sonoran Desert which also provides hiking, biking, and scenic views.
17. Montezuma Castle National Monument
#Things to do in Arizona

Montezuma Castle National Monument is an ancient settlement located in the arid desert of central Arizona. It was a beautiful park, the rangers were very friendly. The path that takes you up the side of the hill is paved and mostly shaded. The ruins of a 20-room high-rise apartment dating back nearly 1,000 years have enough signs to describe what you’re looking at – “palace.” There is also a well connected to the park which is a few miles away. The five-story structure is built into a limestone hill. While exploring the ruins, you’ll learn about the daily lives of the Sinagua people, marvel at their crafts, and gain a deeper understanding of their history and connection to the land.
18. Meteor Crater Natural Landmark
#Top things to do in Arizona

Meteor Crater is located close to Winslow, Arizona. It is regarded as one of the best-preserved meteorite-impact sites in the world. It has a diameter of 3,900 feet and is 560 feet deep. This crater was formed approximately 50,000 years ago from a nickel-iron meteorite believed to be around 160 feet in width. I was impressed with how the museum has expanded its exhibits. There is an appealing balance of historical, scientific, and immersive displays.
Well, really spending time peering into holes is just great. Make sure that you have enough time to spend in order to get the most out of your visit. It’s a pretty easy day trip from Flagstaff and can be combined with a 1/2 day trip to the Petrified Forest if planned well. Visiting Meteor Crater was a great trip for families and people of all ages. It is privately owned.
19. Prescott National Forest

It is an amazing park to visit. Trails of various lengths lead you among petrified logs, along with overlooks offering stunning views of the Painted Desert. The terrain around here is definitely otherworldly; Sometimes it feels like you are on Mars. Just remember this is a national park, and they have a museum here, lots of hiking, like I said, but also some exhibits you can see. There aren’t many places to stay in this town, but if you head to Holbrook or Winslow, some of the surrounding areas, you can easily stay there if you want to do more than a day trip. Also, they have some Native American petroglyphs that you can check out.
20. Sedona
#Best places to visit in Arizona

Honestly, I don’t really know where to start with Sedona. Sedona is an Arizona desert town near Flagstaff, surrounded by red rock buttes, steep canyon walls, natural rock features, and caves. It has a vibrant arts community with spas, art galleries, and new-age shops. To be honest, some of my favorite trails here include Sedona Cave, Cathedral Rock, Devil’s Bridge, Birthing Cave, and more.
They have slide rocks and various swimming holes where people like to swim. The more you explore Oak Creek Canyon, the more you realize it’s a very beautiful place. One of my favorite things to do while in Sedona is hiking. There are many hikes here! You can go to Google and type in the top 10 hikes
21. Slide Rock State Park
#Amazing things to do in Arizona

Slide Rock State Park is located in Oak Creek Canyon just seven miles north of Sedona. The drive from Flagstaff or Sedona is beautiful and an amazing activity in itself. Slide Rock Oak Creek is known for its natural rock water slide formed by slippery rocks. Its underwater hazards are fast, earning its name! It’s a great swimming hole for the family, a cool day out with friends, or a great activity in the area. But the water outside was fine, easy walking.
Plenty of space to park and picnic with ramadas and charcoal grills, green grass, and lots of tables scattered around. With multiple bathrooms on the way to the water and water right, it’s a hike to get to, so don’t wait until you cross your eyes to start heading towards it.
22. Vermilion Cliffs National Monument
#Things to do in Arizona

Situated in northern Arizona, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is a remote, 280,000-acre desert that consists of beautiful sandstone cliffs and unique geologic formations. The most popular and extraordinary rock formation is “The Wave.” However, you need a permit to access this site, which is hard to obtain. Other spots within the Wilderness Area are accessible with permits for day hiking, such as Paria Canyon, White Pocket, and Buckskin Gulch Slot Canyon. This Monument is also on the border of Utah. It’s definitely a pretty desolate area still along the way, but worth seeing at least once.

All the best on your trip to AZ. Will talk to you again in another post. Don’t forget to share your best things to do in Arizona travel experiences with “Tale of Journey”. I look forward to hearing about your travel experiences. Oh yeah, and one more thing Subscribe to our free Newsletter to get more destination updates straight to your email.
